The Epic Hardtail: Lightest and Fastest

The S-Works Epic hardtail is arguably the lightest, fastest cross country hardtail ever. Taking lessons from their Tarmac breakthroughs, Specialized shaved weight, dialed geometry, and got really fast.

When challenged with reinventing the XC hardtail, Specialized delivered the lightest mountain bike they've ever made—the S-Works Epic Hardtail. To do so, they built the entire frame from our highest-end carbon fiber, FACT 11m, and then took some cues from our road bikes. they borrowed the Rider-First Engineered™ concept that originated with the Tarmac. Now, the frame design applies specificity to every tube size and carbon layup for every frame size. This creates the optimal balance of rigidity, weight, and responsiveness, so every frame, regardless of size, performs just as we intended. They also tweaked the geometry for more speed and stability by slacking-out the head tube angle, lengthening the top tube, and correcting the seat tube angle. This way, it feels more planted then ever, and really fast. For the build, the S-Works spares no expense, opting for a RockShox RS-1 Brain fork, Shimano XTR Di2, and hand-built Roval Control SL carbon wheels.

  • To provide the optimal blend of stiffness, crazy light weight, and strength, we constructed the frame from our FACT 11m carbon fiber. And when combined with XC 29 Geometry, the Epic is guaranteed to deliver uncompromising, blistering speed and agile handling come race day—no matter the course.
  • RockShox RS-1 Brain fork is arguably the most sought-after fork in XC racing. Compared to a traditional fork, its inverted design creates a carbon fiber upper that provides superior stiffness, while behaving with more sensitivity to small bumps and more control over larger hits. And with Brain technology, these characteristics are amplified and even more efficient. It also includes our Spike Valve technology that minimizes yaw in cornering, while providing maximum travel in high velocity impacts.
  • Drivetrain duties are handled by the revolutionary Shimano XTR Di2 11-speed groupset, with 36/26T gearing up front and 11-40t at the rear. The first ever electronic mountain groupset, it provides unparalleled shift precision, reliability, and accuracy, making it the secret weapon in any racer's arsenal.
